Sandhouse Lane Nature Reserve
The Greensand Trust manages this small former sand quarry on behalf of the owners Tarmac Cement & Lime Ltd. The reserve contains a mixture of habitats including species-rich neutral grassland, scrub, ponds and a lichen heath that has developed on an area where tarmac was spread from an adjacent coating plant.
The grassland contains a good population of common spotted and pyramidal orchids with broad-leaved helleborine among the scrub, and the two ponds support great crested newts.
