Importance of Bog Pool Dragonflies Highlighted to Scottish Ministers
08/12/2025
Scotland hosts some of the rarest dragonfly species in Britain. Now, an assemblage of Bog Pool specialists has been added to the Scottish Biodiversity List. This includes Azure Hawker (Aeshna caerulea), Common Hawker (Aeshna juncea), Northern Emerald (Somatochlora arctica), White-faced
Darter (Leucorrhinia dubia) and Black Darter (Sympetrum danae), rare and/or threatened species that the BDS recommended for inclusion. Adding this group to the Scottish Biodiversity List highlights the necessity for conservation action, and their needs will now have to be considered by public bodies in many decision-making processes, from approving planning operations to assigning resources to species conservation.
