Scarce Chaser (Libellula fulva) was recorded in the county for the first time in 2025, when a single male was found on 20 May at Magor Marsh, by Phil James. Further details of Phil’s find, and a photo, can be found here.

The population of Scarce Chaser in England has been expanding over the two decades up to 2025, its distribution now encompassing a large area from Cornwall to Kent to Norfolk, and much of the Midlands. There are strongholds on the Somerset Levels and in Gloucestershire. The species is still very rare in south Wales, with a handful of records from Breconshire and Glamorgan, with no confirmed breeding population yet.

Outside of Britain, it occurs widely across Europe, from southern Fennoscandia south to the Mediterranean, although it is almost absent from the Iberian peninsula; its range extends eastwards into western parts of Asia.
