    Join us for our first visit to Swanwick Lakes, between Southampton and Fareham, a site run by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, in the company of local expert and new HSBG member Alison Barker. Please see the location website link for more info about the site.

    A joint meeting of BDS Hants, Surrey, Berkshire Group with Butterfly Conservation, Surrey branch, led by Francis Kelly, an expert in both.
    Wildwood is an abandoned golf course with numerous “water features”. 24 species of Odonata have been recorded across 18+ ponds. Also look out for the very rare Brown Hairstreak butterfly.

    Thursley is a BDS Hotspot for its variety & numbers of dragonflies and a set of habitats rare so close to London. On a similar day in 2021 the number of Four-spotted Chasers and other species at The Bog / Pudmore was off the scale.

    There is the possibility of seeing both Downy Emerald and Brilliant Emerald, along with Keeled Skimmer and many more.

    An opportunity to join the ranger and see beyond the permissive path at the edge of this extensive urban wildlife reserve. Still under development and restoration, the site supports a good diversity of birds and Red-veined Darter was photographed here in 2025.

    We aim to find the rare Southern Damselfly at this reliable site for the species.

    We will check out the runnels at Dry Sandford and then walk down the road to Cothill and Parsonage Moor. At the latter there is also the chance of Keeled Skimmer and Small Red Damselfly, in addition to Southern Damselfly.

    A return visit following last years’ trip during dull weather, to further explore the various habitats at this wetland complex. Previous records for July include a good range of species, with the possibility of Lesser Emperor.

    Wellies or waterproof footwear recommended for the cattle-grazed marsh in the morning, then an afternoon look at the open water on nearby Spynes Mere.
