What's LERCing at your Local Records Centre? A Survey for CDRs

Relations between CDRs and the Local Environmental Records Centre (a.k.a. LERC, LRC, BIC, BRC) seem to vary across the country. Some CDRs are well integrated with their LERC while others are unable to obtain any records from them. Completing this survey helps to build a national picture and answer our questions about whether it is worth diluting our Open Data principles in order to obtain valuable records. As the expert for your area we need your local knowledge, please, before deciding whether to make any changes of policy and where best to channel our efforts.

This survey remains open until 20 October 2024.

David Hepper, Records Officer

Your name(Required)

Section 1: Relationship with your LERC

*** Please complete a separate survey for each LERC with which you have dealings as a CDR.
With the correct casing, e.g. 'SEWBReC'
If so, please enter it here.
How co-operatively do you currently work with your LERC? 5 stars is as good as it gets.
Do you receive records, directly or indirectly, from this LERC for import to iRecord?(Required)
Do you think your LERC has Odonata records not being shared?(Required)
We are interested in records that are not being obtained from other sources.
If so, how valuable are they?
... as part of the big picture.
Which of the following objections do you think may be preventing your LERC from sharing records with BDS?
Check all that may apply.
This would not necessarily have to be done by you as CDR.
Which of the following actions are likely to encourage your LERC to share more records with us?(Required)
Tick all that may apply. If possible, ask them! ** Adopting policies marked below with a double-asterisk would bend our current Open Data principals. Records with extra restrictions would be available to researchers at CEH but would not reach our public dataset on NBN Atlas.
Does your LERC ask you to verify Odonata records they receive?
Tick all that apply
List any sources; e.g. Living Record, Facebook, other social media. Living Record is only popular in a few areas. Don't feel guilty if the answer is None!

Section 2: Usage of BDS Data by this LERC

Is your LERC interested in the records that our recording scheme holds for their area?
We would like our records to be used widely.
Is your LERC aware of (and making use of) the free downloads from our data resource on NBN Atlas?
LERCs and others may freely download our records even if they don't share their own with us. We can also provide custom downloads, if necessary.

Section 3: Feedback

Do you have anything to add? Were the questions clear? What other factors should we be considering? *** Please click the Submit button and then take this survey again if your VC(s) overlap with the boundaries of another LERC.

Report a Sighting

There are several ways to report a Dragonfly sighting:

Option 1

Report a casual sighting or visit to a site, for the benefit of others who might wish to know what’s flying at the moment. These sightings are not vetted and are not automatically treated as scientific records.

Submit a Sighting

Option 2

Report a scientific record for addition to our long-term database of dragonfly occurrence, phenology. These records are subject to verification by a local expert.
