  • Bovey Heathfield DWT Reserve sightings
  • I checked the pond at Bovey Heathfield where the Vagrant Emperors were last autumn, to see if any had emerged. I was surprised to find 3 emperor exuviae almost immediately. However, they were suspiciously big and nearby was an emerged Emperor (imperator) that took its maiden flight. Oh well. They probably spent the winter eating Vagrant Emperor larvae! Also exciting was a territorial Hairy Dragonfly, the first record for the site. Large Red Damselflies were egg-laying and a couple of Azure Damselflies were also present. A male Broad-bodied Chaser was at one of the other ponds.
