Dragonfly species in Monmouthshire: Yellow-winged Darter
Yellow-winged Darter (Sympetrum flaveolum) has been recorded once in Monmouthshire, at Magor Marsh on 13 August 1995. John Martin’s finder’s account can be read here.
The core range of this species is from eastern France eastwards across central and eastern Europe and Asia to the Pacific, with more localised occurrence in Mediterranean areas. Occasionally, migration occurs outside of this area, and 1995 was the year of one such irruption, with many Yellow-winged Darters and other migrant dragonflies seen across Britain.
