Flight period: flies July to mid-October in mainland Europe

A small darter with black legs and broad hind wings. Both sexes have a brown band across each wing just inside the pale yellow to red pterostigma.

Male: blood-red

Female: ochre-brown

Where to See

Latin NameSympetrum pedemontanum

Frequents marshes, swamps and pools with dense reed beds usually in hilly country.

Status & Distribution

Very rare migrant. One record from Gwent in 1995.
