Scotland Officer Handover

The BDS is sad to say goodbye to Danièle Muir this month, who has been doing a sterling job as our Scotland Officer. Daniele has left in order to pursue an MSc and we wish her the best of luck!  The role is being taken over by Andrea Hudspeth, who we would like to warmly welcome to the BDS team!

Danièle Muir has been doing a fine job as the lone BDS Scotland Officer, and is known by many members and volunteers for her enthusiasm and energy. During her time with the BDS, Daniele has travelled far and wide, setting up our network of Dragonfly Hotspots, such as Caerlaverock Wetland Centre near Dumfries, and overseeing practical conservation projects, including the Glen Affric Peatland Restoration Project. Her passion and dedication to dragonfly conservation has enabled the BDS to reach communities all over Scotland and safeguard sites for rare species, like the Northern Emerald. While many of us at the BDS are sad to see her go we would like to wish her all the best for the future!

The role of Scotland Officer has been passed into the capable hands of Andrea Hudspeth, who started with the BDS this month. Andrea recently co-won, with Logan Steele, the Political Advocate category at the RSPB Nature of Scotland awards ceremony, for their work in calling for the introduction of a licensing scheme for driven grouse shooting in Scotland.

Andrea had this to say about her journey into the world of wildlife conservation:

“I became interested in natural history from a very early age probably going back as far as a toddler when I would watch birds feeding in the garden with my Mum. After spending a good few years working as a Manager within the Customer Service, Retail and Hospitality sectors I moved across to Adult Education Teaching and whilst there I became aware of the possibility of a career in nature conservation. I studied for my BSc at the University of Hull and since graduating I have worked for a number of conservation organisations and also ecological consultancies. I now have my own company offering wildlife tours in West Perthshire. My love of nature knows no bounds and working with dragonflies in going to be a sheer joy!”

We’re sure it will Andrea!
