The background colour of the date is used to show different types of meeting:

  • Green is used for BDS and BDS Local Group field meetings and events.
  • Blue events have a BDS stand or speaker but the BDS is not responsible for the event itself - please follow any given links for details.
  • Yellow is for relevant non-BDS events, listed using information as it was provided to us. All details are solely under the control of the individual event organisers and may not get updated again here. We suggest you contact these organisers or follow the given links to confirm details.

For those leading events, the current BDS Risk Assessment and Walk Guidelines can be downloaded here. Walk leaders are advised to adapt the Risk Assessment if necessary. Only those events sent to us in advance and displayed on our website are covered by BDS insurance. It's therefore worth checking that your event is displayed before it takes place. An event can be advertised as only for local group members or limited to bookings only. Many thanks for your cooperation.

    Dragonflies and Butterflies of Fobney Island

    Event organised by the Friends of Fobney

     

    Come and explore this wetland reserve on the edge of Reading. Created in 2011, it has attracted around 16 species of butterflies and 15 species of dragonflies and damselflies, including Small Red-eyed Damselfly and Beautiful Demoiselle. The walk will take around 2-3 hours, depending on what we see. If you wish to stay on after the walk, you can explore the R. Kennet and Kennet and Avon canal which adjoin the site.

    11am at the small car park off Island Road (opposite the Reading recycling centre) SU705709. Please note that parking is very limited.

    Getting there by public transport: Reading Buses 6 from central Reading to Manor Farm Road, then walk through the Kennet Island development, across the A33 and along Island Road (approx 20 mins walk). Alternatively take the Greenwave bus from Reading to Kennet island, then walk across the A33 and along Island Road.  

    Requirements:

    Stout footwear and appropriate clothing – hopefully it will be sunny! Close-focus binoculars will also be useful. There will not be a formal lunch stop, but the walk will run over lunchtime, so please bring something to eat if you think you will need it.

    Dragonfly Walks at National Botanic Garden of Wales

    Get ready for National Dragonfly Week! Dr Deborah Sazer will be leading dragonfly and damselfly walks around the ponds, lakes and marshland of the National Botanic Garden of Wales.

    There will be two walks, 12-1pm, and 2-3pm, both beginning at the main visitor entrance.

    Requirements:

    Suitable footwear is recommended as the paths may be uneven and wet in places.

    The Dragonfly Walks are free with normal admission into the Garden, which is £10.50 for adults, £8.75 for concessions, £4.95 for children and £20/25 for families.

    Introduction to Dragonflies and Damselflies

    This course is aimed at all those with a desire to learn more about these stunning insects. You will be introduced close up to a good number of our Shropshire species of dragonfly and damselfly so that you leave confident in your own abilities to identify them and make species records. Classroom sessions on identification, life history, larvae and exuviae will be combined with a number of field visits to a range of aquatic habitats. This will allow you to put your skills into practice and to observe and understand the visual spectacle of these fascinating insects on the wing.

    Tutor: Sue Rees Evans (formerly McLamb) is the County recorder for Dragonflies in Shropshire and Odonata Tsar for the Shropshire Ecological Data Network.

    For the first time, the World Dragonfly Association meeting will be held in the UK, providing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet up with dragonfly enthusiasts from around the world. The congress will include three special sessions associated with it's location in Cambridge this year:

    Dragonfly flight, celebrating the contributions of Charlie Ellington
    Ten years since Philip, looking at advances in fields Philip Corbet contributed to.

    Specifically designed for beginners, this course includes all aspects of dragonfly identification, biology and ecology, including colour photo presentations, a Microscope-TV link and a field tour of dragonfly habitats on site.

    Buses from locations including Exeter city centre stop at or near Countess Wear roundabout. A cycle route follows the canal from Exeter Quay.
