    Berkshire

My wife Cathy and I visited Hosehill Lake near Theale, Berkshire today between 1.30pm and 3.30pm – perfect conditions, with the reserve looking spectacular in the bright sunshine. The hedgerows were covered with clouds of white blossom, the first cowslips are in flower, and butterflies and bumblebees seemed to be everywhere, along with clouds of alderflies, hoverflies and bee-flies. Birdsong filled the air – including several Nightingales. It was a good day to be out & about.Good numbers (just over a hundred) teneral Common Blue Damselflies (Enallagma Cyathigerum) were seen, scattered evenly around the lake margins and showing a wide variation in development (from milky-coloured new emergents to tenerals to near-mature adults, just coming into their blue-black pruinescence). 5 teneral Red-Eyed Damselflies (Erythromma Najas) were also seen at SU646696, SU646698 and others. I was also delighted to find a teneral Blue-Tail (Ischnura Elegans) closely followed by a near-mature individual, at SU649697. Both of these show an advance of two weeks over my first dates for Hosehill in 2010 – more in line with the records I had at this site in 2009. I wonder if that’s a sign of things to come?Another sure sign of the changing season was the sight of the first Hobby of the year flying high over the surface of the water.
