    Late sighting of Migrant Hawker in Middlesex

    On Sunday 13th November I saw 2 Migrant Hawkers flying along a short stretch of the Yeading Brook, near Ten-acre Wood (LWT Reserve) in the London Borough of Hillingdon. It is the latest I have recorded this species.

    There were still two Southern Hawkers in the Tucker's Bridge Pond area around 2.40pm on 13th November. one was hunting along the trees about 100m to the west and the other searching the pond.

    Still flying in Hampshire. Around 2.15pm on 12th November at Tucker's Bridge Pond (NF)  there were two male Southern Hawkers and a male Common Darter - not quite so sunny and warm as last weekend. I saw at least one Migrant Hawker hunting on the scrape at Lower Test Marshes in the morning.

    In a cold wind and weak sunshine i found at least 50 Common Darters several of which were quite fresh looking.There were cops and ovipositing at 4 of the 5 ponds.

    4 November: Marazion Marsh 10+ Common Darter.5 November: Carminowe Creek, Loe Pool 3 male  Migrant Hawker all flying strongly over the head of the Creek, 12+ male Common Darter and 3 ovipositing pairs seen. Windmill Farm, Lizard, mid afternoon - 14 male and 3 female Common Darter. Sunny and warm conditions with strong Northerly wind.

    Marazion Marsh: 5 male Common Darters.Carminowe Creek, Loe Pool: 2 male Migrant Hawkers, 1 male Southern Hawker all flying strongly over water, 10+male Common Darters, 1 pair ovipositing. Perfect late October conditions after an awful week of rain, wind and cold nights.

    An unseasonal warm sunny visit to Royden Common where we found 12 Common Darters  including one pair ovipositing in a small pool in an old disused quarry area. Also my wife found a female Common Blue Butterfly on flowering Gorse.

    Alton Water, Lemon Hill North,Tattingstone, Suffolk.

    Good numbers of Willow Emerald Damselflies still on the wing.Counted around 26 along stretch from car park in good bright sunshine around mid day 13 C. These are hardy critters, past week has seen several frosts & nothing else found on the wing today here.

    After many days of damp foggy and very dark conditions, some warm sunshine.15 October - Breney Common: 1 male, 1 ovipositing female Southern Hawker, 1 male Golden Ringed, 15+ Common Darters, pairs and ovipositing, 1 male Common Blue Damsel. Chyverton CWTR: After 16.15h 2 male Southern Hawkers, 10 Common Darters, still around small pond. 16 October - Marazion Marsh: 1 male Common Hawker who over some hours used my trouser leg as his perch rejecting all other! 5 male Migrant Hawkers and  1 pair seen. 20+ Common Darters, at least 5+ pairs, and oviposting.

    Saturday 15th October Dagnam Park LNR, Harold Hill. 9 Common Darters and a female Migrant Hawker this afternoon.

    Dagnam Park LNR, Harold Hill near Romford. At least 9 Common Darters on the Perch Pond - 4 males, 2 pairs in tandem and ovipositing, plus a solo female ovipositing. Also a female Migrant Hawker at the Lily Pond. Earlier in the month towards the end of the unseasonal heatwave, a Brown Hawker was seen (2/10/11) and the last 3 Small Red-eyed Damselflies (males) on 3rd October.

    Visiting Coombe Hill Canal NR, approx 30 Common Darters were present, with 7 mating and ovipositing pairs, and a mating pair of Migrant Hawkers settled obligingly to enable photographs to be taken!

    At Felix Farm Trout Fishery, Binfield, T=17C, wall-to-wall sunshine in the early afternoon, a single male Blue-tailed Damselfly and three male Ruddy Darters provided personal late flying records. Also present  Common Blue Damselfly (8 males), Common Darter (47 including 37 males plus 5 ovipositing pairs) and Migrant Hawker (4 males).

    Breconshire, six species still flying 10 to 14 October 2011. At Mynydd Illtud, 14.10.11, 8 Common Darters, 4 Black Darters, 5 Emerald Damsels, 4 Common Hawkers including one ovipositing. On 12 Oct a Southern Hawker at my garden pond Brecon, and on 10th about 15 Migrant Hawkers at Llangorse Lake

    Many Common Darters and one female Southern Hawker ovipositing in the Forest of Dean, and a late sighting of a male Emerald Damsel.

    Many Common Darters and one female Southern Hawker ovipositing in the Forest of Dean, and a late sighting of a male Emerald Damsel. At Woorgreens Lake in the Forest of Dean on a cloudless autumn day; 45 Common Darters were counted with many ovipositing pairs. The lake has been drained this summer to get rid of fish, and hopefully improve the habitat for dragonflies in the future. The darters were all in or near two small pools which still contain water at the side of the main lake. Later at the new ponds at Cinderford Linear Park North (where Small Blue-tailed were discovered in June) there were 15 Common Darters, 2 Ruddy Darters, 2 male Common Hawkers with one chasing a female Common Hawker, one male Southern Hawker near a female ovipositing her eggs in a log, and a single male Emerald Damselfly.

    At Crowthorne Wood this morning, 13 October, (T=17, cloudy with occasional bright sunny spells) a singleton male Small Red Damselfly, a personal late flying record by over 3 weeks. Also present: Black Darter, 2 males, and Common Darter, 9 males and 4 pairs, 3 ovipositing. No Hawkers about.

    Migrant hawkers and common darters at Oare marshes

    Migrant hawkers and common darters at Oare marshes. The warmer weather brought out 2 common darters on the wing on the walk round, plus another mating pair flying past the window as we drove in (probably common rather than ruddy darters).  A migrant hawker also past while by the road looking over the East Scrape.

    A brown hawker, found at Carnoustie in East Scotland on 9th October. Beautiful speciman, although clearly near the end of its life as it was lying on grass and unable to fly. My wildlife book dated 1997 states that the brown hawker is absent from Scotland. Another example of a species migrating further North I suppose.

Breney Common -  midday, perfect weather conditions: 2 male Southern Hawker, 5 male Golden-ringed. 15+ Black Darter, inc. 5 pairs and ovipositing. 20+ Common Darter, many pairs and ovipositing. 1 male Common Blue Damsel. Chyverton - late afternoon, overcast dark conditions: 2 male Southern Hawker, 1 female ovipositing and 1 male Common Darter.
