A favourable day to go looking for Hairy Dragonflies in Green Lane, Frampton, was rewarded by seeing one female and one male resting in vegetation, probably before their first-flights, allowing many photographs to be taken! Also present were 60 Large Red Damselflies, mainly females, with several tenerals, and a few males. In 100-acres WWT Slimbridge, adjacent to the site, one teneral male Azure Damselfly, and superb views of 4 Hobbies - just hope they don't eat the emerging Hairy Dragons!

Following on from my finding a Downy Emerald exuvia on 30th April, Terry Dabner discovered a recently emerged Downy [pre-flight] next to it's exuvia at the same site - Lower Moor Farm, Cotswold Water Park - but another new location several hundred metres from mine! Despite the adverse weather we may be shaping up for another bumper year for Cordulea in the CWP! Photo on my blog.

First odonata of year for Wiltshire. During a warm sunny spell today I visited Lower Moor Farm in the Cotswold Water Park. My hunch paid off and I found 6 freshly emerged Common Blue Damselflies, 4 females and 2 males. Also 1 semi mature male Large Red Damselfly. But the best was a fresh exuvia of a Downy Emerald Dragonfly!! The earliest 'sighting' in Wiltshire. Photos on blog tomorrow.

A poor day with sunny spells. Had seen only an Orange-Tip in flight, but a gust of wind blew an insect across the river which landed in long grass almost at my feet ! It was immediately apparent as Beautiful Demoiselle Calopteryx virgo, although a 'poor' female/immature i.e. only days old yet torn wings (due to days of gusty wing?). The slightest of colour on the abdomen, wings dark, grey-brown. This river (The White River at London Apprentice) produces literally hundreds in this rivurine habitat later in the season.
