This is the diary of previous special events, courses, field trips and holidays.

The background colour of the date is used to show different types of meeting. Green is used for BDS and BDS Local Group organised field meetings and events, Blue where the BDS will have a stand or speaker(s), but is not responsible for the event itself (please follow any given links for further details) and Yellow for other dragonfly events. These last are listed for information only, using information as it was provided to us. The BDS is not directly involved in these events and therefore all details are solely under the control of the individual event organisers. We suggest you contact these organisers direct or follow the given links to confirm details.

    Please book places in advance of arrival with Mike. Walk to last about 2 hrs, so a packed lunch would be optional and wellies/ stout boots essential.

    Our Dragonfly Safaris are all about finding out more about dragonflies.
    How to find them How to identify them Where do they live? What do they eat? What eats them? Where do they lay their eggs? How long do they live? What is a larva? What does a larva eat?
    A Safari lasts about two hours, during which we'll take you to some of the best spots around Wicken Fen to see dragonflies. We'll show you what dragonflies are there and help you to identify them. For the last half-hour, in the Wren Building, we'll give a demonstration of their underwater life with live dragonfly larvae shown through a microscope and TV screen.

    The aim of the course is for participants to identify dragonfly larvae to genus and understand the basic steps of keying out to species. The will consist of the Microscope-TV link, one-to-one guidance, self-study periods and, dependent on the weather, a hunt for larvae/exuviae. PLEASE NOTE You must book for the courses we offer as the number of places is necessarily limited - so please book as soon as you can to avoid disappointment.  Course led by Henry Curry and Henry Stanier

A detailed look at the life cycle and ecology of dragonflies. We will be looking for adults as well as pond dipping and locating exuvia (old body cases) outdoors, complementing classroom sessions covering habitat and distribution, ecology, methods of identification and how to distinguish dragonflies from damselflies in the field.     The Cinderford Linear Park is on the edge of the town of Cinderford. It has a series of ponds, a stream, and woodland, along its length, with fishing lakes at the northernmost end. The park was previously part of the Forest of Dean Railway network. Over 20 species of Odonata breed, including Scarce Blue-tailed Damselfly, which hadn’t been seen in the FOD for approximately 20 years, and which was re-discovered in recently dug ponds in early June 2011. SO61 has had 28 species recorded, out of a Gloucestershire total of 32.
