Carymoor Environmental Centre, Somerset VC6 - Brown Hawker exuvia from centre's small pond.  Date seems extremely early.  Exuvia compared with both Cham and Smallshire & Swash, only seems to fit this species; notably the banding on the legs and pale markings on the thorax extending on to rear of eyes.  Exuvia found floating in small pond, appears in too good condition to have survived over winter.

Also present on site - Large Red Damselfly, emergent Four-spotted Chaser.

  • 7th May 2016
    Berkshire

Good numbers of teneral damselflies were seen at Hosehill Lake LNR yesterday (7th May) during a conservation work party. Whilst we were working on the Groups' boat (launching a new tern nesting raft) we saw a steady stream of teneral Coenagrion damsels moving from the margins of the lake into the meadows and scrub.

We only had a chance to check the eastern and northern sides of the site, but I estimated approximately 60-70 damselflies, mostly new emergents but some which were starting to develop the first trace of blue on their thorax and abdomen. As you can imagine, the damsels were quite skittish such warm (23 degrees) and still conditions and - although they did frequently settle - they were also very easy to disturb and the pale colours did make them rather hard to follow.

Most of those I was able to examine closely were Common Blues (Enallagma cyathigerum) but I also found three Red-Eyed Damselflies (Erythromma najas) - easily identified by their stockier build and solid thoracic marking (no stripes). There was also a Beautiful Demoiselle (Calkopteryx virgo) - an extremely unusual sighting for this site so early in the season (perhaps the larva made its' way through the culverts from the Kennet and Avon) and several fully-mature Large Reds (Pyrrhosoma nymphula). I couldn't find any Azures (Coenagropn puella) but they may well have been present.

No dragons so far, but plenty of other invertebrates including caddis-, crane- and alder-flies, whirligig beetles, plenty of butterflies and what we suspect might be a new spider species for the site. All in all a very productive morning...and we managed to get the raft out successfully, too!.
