Several Large Reds in the garden today. Two in cop in the front garden but had gone by the time I had my camera. So I looked in the pond and there were 3 more. I  let the pond go wild last year; there are still fish but the plants and weeds provide shelter, I hope, as I enjoy both the fish and the insects. As this is not the first sighting this year maybe it's wotking.

My first Emperor Dragonfly of the year seen at Westhay NNR in Somerset, frustrated to miss a record photo, it was up and away far too quickly, if memory serves - I believe this is my earliest recorded date yet for the species. Also a couple of Scarce Chaser, half a dozen Black-tailed Skimmer, 60-70 Four-spotted Chaser, 20+ Hairy Dragonfly. Good numbers of Variable Damselfly among Azure, Blue-tailed and Common Damselfly. It would appear that Red-eyed Damselfly are having a good year on the Somerset Levels, the same can't be said though for Large Red Damselfly I'm seeing surprisingly few on my travels this year!

White-faced Darters at Foulshaw Moss: emergence in good numbers continues: Heather and Tony Marshall found a further 535 exuviae when monitoring this re-introduced population. The recorded emergence for the season is now 1390. It seems possible that the very early flight season at Foulshaw may even be over by end of June.

Reasonably good weather for a day at Shapwick Heath NNR in Somerset primarily to see the recently emerged Scarce Chaser - happily good fortune was on my side with at least 15 individuals seen in a relatively small area, all were wonderfully fresh and looking splendid, among them were also many Four-spotted Chaser and during my visit at least a dozen Hairy Dragonfly were recorded, including three females. Many good photographs were taken of these suberb insects that behaved themselves quite well as the shutter clicked!

Damselflies were all in healthy numbers; Azure, Variable, Red-eyed, Blue-tailed, Large-red and Common Blue were studied as they went about their fascinating lives. The Azure in particular were in countless numbers, each step putting countless dozens up, it made searching among them for any Variable like looking for the proverbial 'needle in a haystack' but with a little perseverance reasonably good numbers were evident...excellent day in a premier Odonata reserve.

The weather wasn't great for the first Devon BDS meeting today, with showers and temperature up to only 15C forecast. However, 10 of us walked around Stover in the morning, finding a few emerging Four-spotted Chasers and small numbers of immature Large Red, Azure and Blue-tailed Damselflies. However, the highlights were on one of the surrounding small ponds: at least four Red-eyed Damselflies, which stuck it out on Broad-leaved Pondweed during rain instead of resorting to the trees, and four Downy Emerald exuviae. In better weather after lunch we saw 2 male Hairy Dragonflies at Little Bradley Ponds and 3 more Downy Emerald exuviae, with a failed emergent adult on one. Astonishingly, Steve Jones found one of the exuvia some 6m from the pond, almost 1.5m up in a birch sapling! And as we left, the temperature hit the magic 17C!

Foulshaw Moss. With two BDS member colleagues, I collected exuviae of White-faced Darters as part of our usual monitoring procedure: a pleasing 855! This is a good sign that the re-introduction project here is working, and follows the equally encouraging count last year (as reported in Dragonfly News 68).  The early date is a surprise and perhaps helped by recent hot weather. We presume there are yet more to come.
