I visited two sites on the River Stour with Ben Moyes.  At Lamarsh we saw 3 male Scarce Chasers, male and female Hairy Dragonfly, hundreds of Banded Demoiselles, good numbers of Common Blue Damselfly and a few Large Red, Blue-tailed and Azure Damselflies. A little further south, at Bures, we found 2 male and 1 female Scarce Chaser, c5 Red-eyed Damselflies and small numbers of Banded Demoiselles and the regular damselflies.  Generally, numbers of odonata were well down on the same period last year, with high water levels following recent storms, and we didn't find White-legged Damselfly at either site.

Theres an excellent looking 4-6 feet wide ditch, that winds through this large area of bogg, wet meadow, ideal for Hairy Dragonflies, and today there were 3/4 males looking for females around the sedge and yellow flag, watched one male find a female and take off in tandem. Up to 10 Four-spotted Chasers shared this same stretch of ditch, mating and ovipositing. Banded Demoiselle also present.

Holt Lowes, North Norfolk. A pleasant few hours spent with Keeled Skimmers, of which around 60 were noted, mainly females and immature males, all at different stages of maturity/colour. Several males with partial pruinescence and numerous maiden flights seen. Two tandem were pairs noted, one of which was later seen ovipositing with male in attendance. At the same time and only a few yards away, I found a very recently emerged Keeled Skimmer, still with its exuvia. How nice to see the whole cycle of events.

At least 25 Scarce Chaser including fresh tenerals this lunchtime at Troublefield NR. This is the first time I've seen such high numbers at this site (they breed along the adjacent Moors River). Either a change of heart or conditions have been too wet, but as yet they haven't introduced the cattle to the north meadow which means perfect feeding and roosting conditions.

Sculthorpe Common, near Fakenham. For years this wet, boggy site with numerous small ponds used to be grazed all year round by around 25 horses, bred for the French meat trade!, but no more and this, the second summer without horses has allowed the two main ponds with their margins to flourish. Today there were between 80/100 Emerald Damselflies, Lestes sponsa with Lestes dryas also present, never seen so many on this site. Numerous Broad-bodied and Four spotted Chasers present along with Common Darters making maiden flights.

Devon Group meeting to River Otter

Eleven BDS and Devonshire Association folk walked the River Otter north from Tipton St John in mainly cloudy conditions. We encountered hundreds of Banded Demoiselles, two Beautiful Demoiselles and small numbers of Azure, Common Blue and Large Red Damselflies, but only a single White-legged Damselfly. The scarcity of the last was surprising, although it's still early in the season for them, but it was disappointing not to discover Scarce Chaser - they must be on the Otter, which lies between known sites in the lower Axe and Exe/Clyst valleys. A Golden-ringed Dragonfly splashed down into the river and had difficulty rescuing itself (we were helpless on the opposite bank). Seven stayed on for an evening Beaver watch, but without success - although two of us had nice views of an Otter (in the Otter!) going by.
