This is the diary of previous special events, courses, field trips and holidays.

The background colour of the date is used to show different types of meeting. Green is used for BDS and BDS Local Group organised field meetings and events, Blue where the BDS will have a stand or speaker(s), but is not responsible for the event itself (please follow any given links for further details) and Yellow for other dragonfly events. These last are listed for information only, using information as it was provided to us. The BDS is not directly involved in these events and therefore all details are solely under the control of the individual event organisers.     Shropshire's freshwater habitats boast a total of 29 different species of dragonfly.  Some are uncommon, all are visibly stunning and fascinating to watch as they fly over ponds, rivers and upland flushes.  Emphasis will be on field identification skills and appreciation of the ecology of these beautiful and primitive insects.

    To survey this extensive area of mature flooded sand and gravel pits that constitute the Water Park. Eighteen species have been recorded in the Park.

    A walk to look for Odonata species at this wetland site. 14 species were recorded in 2010, including Erythromma viridulum (which was a new location for this species in 2010).

    10:30am at Hartpury Orchard Centre: SO785254 (car park). Take the A417 to Hartpury, in the centre of the village turn into Corse End Lane, (on the left if coming from Gloucester) continue until a sharp right-hand turn, signposted Blackwell’s End Green, take this turn and after approx 500 metres the Hartpury Orchard Centre and car park is on your right.

    Strong footwear or wellingtons. The centre will be open for use of the facilities, with grateful thanks to the owner, but bring a packed lunch as there is no cafe/restaurant on site.

    This course will look at the dragonflies and damselflies to be found in Scotland, including identification of exuviae and larvae if available.  The course will be useful for both amateur naturalists and professional ecologists looking to expand their experience and knowledge.  The course will also provide a taster for moths, butterflies, hoverflies, grasshoppers, beetles and bugs.

    This course will give a thorough grounding in dragonflies and damselflies, concentrating on the wide range of species that occurs in south Devon.  Indoor and field sessions will cover dragonfly biology, the identification of adults and larvae, conservation and habitat requirements.

    This is the only site on Dartmoor holding both Southern Hawker and Small Red-eyed Damselfly, plus characteristic moorland species like Golden-ringed Dragonfly and Black Darter.

    Lakenheath Fen RSPB reserve, Suffolk
    Event:

    Walk led by Dr Pam Taylor, to identify a broad range of dragonfly species and other wildlife on this relatively new RSPB reserve. To link with the national atlas project, an introduction to dragonfly recording will be included.
